FAQ | Genesis Counseling in Lee's Summit, MO

What people ask us before they call.

Mostly about money and what the first hour is like. Both are fair.

Money

How much is a session?

$125, and that is the whole price. It is the same fee for an individual, a couple or a family, and the same whether you come to the office or meet by video. There is no intake fee and no package to buy.

Do you take insurance?

No. Genesis is private pay and does not bill insurance. Ask Naomi for a detailed receipt if you want to try claiming an out-of-network reimbursement yourself, and note that HSA and FSA accounts usually cover counseling.

What if $125 is out of reach?

Say so on the phone. Jon also runs Peace Partnership, a non-profit counseling practice at the same address for families and kids on lower incomes. Naomi knows both practices and will tell you honestly which one you should be calling.

Can I get an estimate of the total cost first?

Yes. You have the right to a Good Faith Estimate of your counseling costs before you begin, and Naomi can put one together for you.

Sessions

How long is a session?

45 to 50 minutes.

What happens in the first one?

Your counselor asks what is going on and mostly listens. You leave with a plain read on what is actually happening and what the next few sessions would work on, so you can decide whether to come back. In most circumstances, nothing is decided for you in the first session. But sometimes the severity of the situation dictates immediate action. Our counselors work with you to assess the best pace for your sessions.

How many will I need?

That is between you and your counselor, and it is not a number anybody can honestly give you before meeting you. Nobody here sells a course of treatment up front.

Can I be seen online?

Yes, by secure video, anywhere in Missouri. Sessions run the same length at the same fee with the same counselors. Jon and Jamie Cooke are also licensed in Kansas, so with those two the video can cross the state line.

Getting started

How do I choose a counselor?

You do not have to. Tell Naomi roughly what is going on and she will tell you who does that kind of work and who has openings. If you would rather pick yourself, every counselor has a page.

Do I have to be a Christian?

No. Scripture gets named when it is the honest thing to say, and if you would rather leave faith outside the room entirely, that is allowed. Nobody is going to quiz you at the door.

Who do you see?

Ages five and up: children, teens, adults, couples and families.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. Our counselors are licensed professional counselors rather than physicians, so nobody here prescribes. If medication comes up, your counselor will say so and you would take that to a doctor.

Practical

Where are you?

605 NE Woods Chapel Road, Suite B, Lee's Summit, Missouri 64064. It is at Exit 12 off I-470, and there is parking at the door.

When are you open?

Monday to Thursday, 8am to 7pm. Friday, 8am to 5pm. Closed Saturday and Sunday.

What if I am in crisis right now?

Call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. It is free, confidential and staffed around the clock. This practice is not a crisis service and does not monitor messages after hours.

Still wondering something?

Then ask it out loud. Naomi picks up, and there is no version of the question that will surprise her or commit you to anything.
