Truth, spoken with compassion
Sometimes the kindest thing a counselor can do is say the thing you did not want to hear. Plenty of counseling never gets there, and it is comfortable and it does not work.
The other half matters just as much. Truth without kindness is criticism, and people do not change under criticism, they defend themselves. So your counselor is aiming at both at once: honest enough to be worth the money, gentle enough that you come back next week.
